Water Softener for Your Appliances and Home

The Benefits of Installing a Water Softener

As a trusted appliance repair company with over two decades of experience in the industry, we at National Appliance Repair understand the importance of keeping your appliances in top shape. One factor that can significantly impact the lifespan and performance of your appliances is the quality of water running through them. In this article, we'll delve into the benefits of installing a water softener in your home, how it can extend the life of your appliances, and improve your overall quality of life.

Result of the scale build up

To demonstrate the difference between hard and soft water in terms of detergent efficiency, we conducted a simple experiment that you can try at home.

We filled two cups with water - one with tap (hard) water and the other with filtered (soft) water.

hard tap water

Tap(hard, 430 ppm) water

soft water

Filtered(Soft, 70ppm) water

Then, we added the same amount of detergent to each cup and stirred them for 30 seconds. As you can see in the pictures, the soft water produced significantly more foam than the hard water, indicating that the detergent is working more effectively in soft water.

detergent in soft water works better, than in hard(tap) water

Why does this happen?

The science behind this phenomenon lies in the interaction between the detergent and the minerals present in hard water. Hard water contains high levels of calcium and magnesium, which can react with the detergent, forming insoluble compounds that do not dissolve easily. This reduces the detergent's ability to create foam and clean effectively.

Soft water, on the other hand, is free of these minerals, allowing the detergent to dissolve more readily and form a rich lather. This results in better cleaning action, as the foam can more easily penetrate dirt and stains, lifting them away from surfaces.

Benefits of Installing a Water Softener

Safeguarding Your Appliances: Hard water, characterized by high levels of minerals such as calcium and magnesium, can lead to mineral buildup inside your appliances. This buildup not only reduces efficiency but can also damage components over time. Installing a water softener eliminates these minerals, ensuring your appliances run smoothly and have a longer lifespan.

Enhanced Appliance Performance: Appliances like dishwashers, washing machines, and water heaters are designed to work optimally with soft water. Hard water compromises their performance, causing issues like residue on dishes or stiff, scratchy clothes. A water softener optimizes the performance of these appliances, guaranteeing they function as intended and deliver superior results.

Reduced Soap and Detergent Use: As you see on the experiment above, soft water allows soap and detergents to lather better and be more effective. This means you can use fewer cleaning products, saving you money and reducing the environmental impact of your cleaning routine.

Energy Savings: The scale buildup from hard water can decrease the efficiency of your water heater, causing it to work harder and consume more energy. By softening your water, you can improve the efficiency of your water heater and potentially reduce your energy bills.
